Diamond Clarity
Understanding Diamond Clarity: Nature’s Fingerprint
Every natural diamond tells a unique story that began deep beneath the Earth’s surface over a billion years ago. Under extreme heat and pressure, diamonds develop tiny natural characteristics known as inclusions (internal features) and blemishes (surface irregularities). Think of them as nature’s fingerprint—no two diamonds are completely identical, and these microscopic details are what make your stone genuinely one-of-a-kind.
The Official Clarity Grading Scale
To evaluate the purity of a diamond objectively, gemologists use a standardized grading scale under 10x magnification.
The scale ranges from absolute perfection to stones with prominent, visible characteristics:
- Flawless / Loupe Clean FL / IF (LC)
Exceptionally rare. No inclusions or blemishes are visible under 10x professional magnification.
- Very, Very Small Inclusions VVS1 – VVS2
Inclusions are so minute that they are extremely difficult for a skilled grader to see even under 10x magnification.
- Very Small Inclusions VS1 – VS2
Minor inclusions that range from difficult to somewhat easy to see under magnification, but completely invisible to the naked eye.
- Small Inclusions SI1 – SI2
Noticeable inclusions under magnification. For many stones in this range, they remain eye-clean and offer fantastic value.
- Piqué / Imperfect P1 – P3 (I1–I3)
Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance, or be visible to the naked eye.
The Internationaldiamondssales Approach: Finding Your Eye-Clean Stone
At Internationaldiamondssales, we believe that you don’t need to pay for absolute microscopic perfection to own a breathtaking diamond. Here is how we help you maximize value:
- The “Eye-Clean” Advantage: Grades in the VS1–VS2 and even SI1–SI2 ranges are often completely “eye-clean”—meaning that while a gemologist can spot inclusions under a loupe, they are totally invisible to anyone looking at your ring in everyday light.
- Smart Allocation: By choosing a diamond with minor, invisible-to-the-eye inclusions instead of a flawless stone, you can redirect your budget toward a larger carat weight or a superior cut.
- The Role of Diamond Shape: Certain shapes (like Brilliant Round cuts) are exceptional at masking inclusions due to their intense light return, while step-cuts (like Emerald or Asscher) have open, transparent tables that require higher clarity grades.
Clarity measures what is inside the diamond, but your primary concern should be what the eye can see. Unless you are looking through a jeweler’s loupe, a high-clarity grade offers no visible difference compared to a cleverly chosen “eye-clean” stone. At Internationaldiamondssales, we handpick stones that balance purity and brilliance, ensuring you get maximum visual impact without unnecessary premium costs.
